Abstract] As China entered WTO, Chinese have more and more opportunities to communicate with foreigners. Nowadays English teaching has become an important task in middle schools. Though many teaching approaches have been emerging in FLT, Communicative Approach has become the mainstream in English Language Teaching in China. The approach which helps realizes the goal of learning languages is using the new-learned language to communicate with other people in real life. Many linguists and teachers consider Communicative Approach as an effective way to solve the problems existing in the teaching and learning process. In this paper, the author tries to analyze the present condition of English teaching, and then gives a general introduction of the Communicative Approach so as to discuss the application of this kind of method in the spoken English teaching in middle schools. This paper emphasizes that the application of Communicative Approach will improve students’ spoken English efficiently and help them communicate better, finally make them be the right talents needed in the 21st century.
【摘 要】随着中国加入世界贸易组织,中国人同外国人交流的机会也是越来越多了。英语教学已经成为中学教学中一项重要的研究课题。在中国的外语教学中,许多种教学方法应运而生,其中交际法已经成为英语教学的主流。交际法体现了学习外语的实质,即能够在现实生活中运用所学的语言和别人进行交流。许多语言学家和老师都认为交际法是解决教学和学习过程中存在问题的有效方法。笔者在本篇论文中首先分析了目前英语教学的现状, 然后对交际法做了综述,以此作为理论依据来论述交际教学法在中学英语口语教学中的应用, 强调交际教学法的应用有利于提高中学生的口语能力, 使他们能够更好地使用英语进行交流, 并成为21世纪社会真正需要的人才。
1. Introduction
“We live in the world of languages which are used for us to communicate, we need get more and more information from some other countries and communicate with them.” [1] Furthermore, with China’s entering the WTO and successfully bidding for the Olympic games 2008, and “with the development of business transactions around the world, being capable of speaking fluently has emerged recently as one of the basic requirements of modern people in the global village.”[2] However, for a long time, “the nature of the language as a means of communication was ignored in teaching and learning
methodology. The emphasis was only put on linguistic and forms without consideration for the nature of language.” [3] Nowadays, in middle school, the process of oral English teaching usually consists of the following steps: first, the teacher gives the setting; next, the teacher presents the common sentence structures; then, the students practise passively. During the whole process, the students only make conversations following the teaching materials mechanically and absorb new knowledge passively, and it is really hard for the teacher to be clear about if the students have really mastered the new knowledge and if they can communicate with each other fluently. Therefore, new teaching approaches need considering. “The communicative language teaching is an innovation in English language teaching. It reveals the social function of language and the essence and goal of foreign language teaching, and it always regards the development of communicative ability as the core of foreign language teaching.” [4] As a new teaching approach, the Communicative Teaching Approach was introduced in China since 1990s. Now, it has become one of the main teaching approaches in the field of foreign language teaching in our country. This paper will make a discussion of Communicative Approach and its application in teaching spoken English in middle schools.
2. An overview of Communicative Approach
