ily ethics is not individualistic. Morality is derived from a person’s relationship with their family. (Chris Fraser; Dan Robins, 2011: 17-35) Morality is determined through a person's fulfillment of a role, such as that of a parent, a child or a sister or brother.
In domestic, some scholars, such as Jianchu Lin (1992) pointed, in family life, various relationship is weaved by family members, like spousal relationship, parent-child relationship, sibling relationship, the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, sister-in-law relationship as well as grandparents-grandchildren relationship and so on. A series of family living criteria is summarized in the process of adjusting these relations, and a whole set of inner belief of family life formed, namely, family ethical relations. To sum up, “family ethical relations” is the code of conduct and criteria to adjust the relationship between family members, and it is the component of social ethics and morals.
In family ethical relations, husband and wife relation is the most important relation, which is also the foundation of other family ethical relations. In family, parents have definite ethic identity, and they need to shoulder corresponding ethic responsibility. The husband and wife’s deviation to the identity and responsibility will become crux of family discord in the future. The apathy of husband and wife’s relations will ruin the original family order, and their deviation to the own ethic identity will contribute to the inharmonious family environment and has an irreversible effect on their children. Followed is the love of the parents and children, that kind of love is more prominent. Children are the continuation of life of their parents, often they are the fusion agents of husband and wife relationship. Parents always treat their children as a part of themselves, children is like products created by parents, therefore love given by parents are often more than that from Children to their parents. Because of the existence of blood relationship, parents give their children life, raise them, children also love their own parents back. (Litian Miao, 2009: 5-6) In the family, in addition to husband and wife, parents and children, the closest relationship is the relationship between the brothers and sisters. Brothers and sisters’ love affects the thoughts and actions of brothers and sisters, coordinating the ethical relationship between brothers and sisters. Love and peace relationship, and mutual assistance between them are highly praised by any family ethics and any society, also abandon brothers and sisters is held in contempt by family ethics. (Xiangming Liang, 2007: 37-44)
In The Bulwark, story revolves around the Barnes. Hannah and Rufus Barnes, both Quakers, move out of Maine to Trenton, New Jersey, where Hannah's widowed sister lives. Their son Solon, the protagonist, meets Benecia Wallin; although she is affluent and he is not, they get married. Solon works in a bank in Philadelphia, where his Quaker values are contrary to financial ethos. He summons a bank examiner from Washington DC to stop the corrupt practices of some chief executives. Eventually, he resigns. Meanwhile, two of his offspring, Etta and Stewart, repudiate their Quaker upbringing.
