onfident about his race from that moment on, which led to his excellent performances in many aspects he attached, and that was true with his career in literature. His particular experiences of entering an institute by scholarship, of going from the south to the north, witnessed different atmospheres between the south and the north, which helped Ellison “penetrate the sorrow hidden deep in American black’s heart.” Wide interests in music, literature, sculpture, sociology made his work varieties of arts and knowledge, such as humorous language, the tempo of the Jazz, the likes between literature works, symbolism and so on.
Among these, humor, the fascinating picturesque in the novel, is one accident out-coming but in some way it indicates some necessities: some couple of contradictions will answer that. Ellison has excellent quality and talents in many aspects, but his race is despised by the society; Ellison was born with belief of justice and freedom, while he witnesses and suffers many oppressions and injustices from the south to the north; he believes in freedom, but the leftist politics disapproves him. How to get real freedom and what‘s exactly the society like? Ellison won’t express his mind in a simple or usual way for his outstanding arts. He has a wide horizon, so when he thinks of the oppressions and injustices, he will jump out of the way of purely protesting against that. Of course, he has stopped following the idea of the leftist politics. Finally, humor is compromising and it is a forceful art. This kind of art roots in the author’s inner quality and talents. Ellison is such an author and humor is the right way and he also learned it from Twain’s humorous writing style. By means of humor, Ellison expresses his sympathy on American black and reveals some injustices and chaos in American society. In the fiction, the text is full of funny plots and humorous languages.

2.1.1 Speaking after finishing a battle royal
Because of the narrrator’s3 well-received oration at his graduation from a high school, he is asked to repeat the speech at a gathering of the town’s most influential white citizens. The gathering is held on the day after his graduation. But before his speech, he has to participate in a “battle royal” to fight several black boys in a hall. The boys are half-naked and are forced to watch a blond-staked naked woman dance, which makes them very ashamed. Then they are made to wear blindfold to fight each other in a ring. Finally, the narrator gets black and blue after the battle royal. In a noisy occasion, the narrator is asked to begin his speech. Resisting thirst and bleeding, the narrator still tries to speak. But someone under yells him to speak louder. He speaks and gets worn-out. He wants to stop but the superintend, who is listening there, makes him not dares to. There is talking and laughing under the stage, and there is interrogation from the whites when the narrator says “Social Responsibility”. The under ask him to repeat the phrase, because a black has no position and he is not allowed to have responsibility. The whites force the narrator to say other words, as the whites dislike the word “responsibility” from the black. The M.C. (master of ceremonies) criticizes the narrator, so the narrator changes “social r
