write this thesis.Firstly, comparing with other traditional methods studying literary works, the AppraisalSystem will be more objective by studying from the perspective of linguistics without anadmixture of personal emotion and thoughts. Besides, this thesis is the integration of linguisticsand literature, which will demonstrate a fact that studying literary works from the perspectiveof linguistics is very effective. And it once again proves the applicability the Appraisal System.Secondly, this thesis broadens a new perspective for the application of the AppraisalSystem. There are few researches about literary fairy tales, and fewer of them are studied fromthe perspective of linguistics, especially the Appraisal System. And among the researches basedon the Appraisal System, rare of them make a contrast between Chinese literary fairy tales andBritish fairy tales, which will be studied in this thesis.Thirdly, the study of this thesis will make a contribution to the creation of literary fairytales. By contrasting Chinese and British literary fairy tales, different characteristics of themwill be clearly shown in this thesis, which could be used for
Reference by the Chinese writersand British writers.Last but not the least, certain values are embodied in literary fairy tales, which are veryimportant in children education. Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Previous Studies on Literary Fairy Tales
The development of literary fairy tales could be divided into three stages. In the primarystage, fairy tales are born from legends and folk tales, then, fairy tales slowly develop intoliterary fairy tales. In the second stage, people begin to focus on folk literature, and sometalented scholars and writers start to collect the folk fairy tales, and create on the basis of thesefolk fairy tales. Perrault’s Fairy Tales, Grimm’s Fairy Tales and Anderson’s Fairy Tales standfor the completion of the second stage. The third stage is the sublimation of literary form offairy tales, which is characterized by Germany’s romantic fairy tales in late eighteenth centuryand British fiction of fairy tales after middle nineteenth century.There are two factors that influence the development of British literary fairy tales. The firstis the Industrial Revolution in Victoria time, which arouses giant social change and pushes thedevelopment of British children’s literature and literary fairy tales. The second factor is thetranslation of classic European fairy tales. Italian writer Giambattista Basile’s tale Pentameroneis one of the origins of European literary fairy tale, and the first British version is accomplishedby Sir Richard Burton in the end of nineteenth century. The important represents of Frenchclassic fairy tale are fairy tales created by Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy (1651-1709) and Contesde ma mere L’Oye created by Charles Perrault (1628-1703). It is considered that French classicfairy tales have great influence on British fantastic literature, even influence the wholedevelopment process of fantastic literature (Carpenter & Prichard, 1991).
