ry for us to know their sense form ing mechanism clearly. Strictly speaking, the ambivalent phenomenon is a special kind of pol yseme. When we retrieve a word from its etymology, the polyseme may not come up with a full set of ready-made sense divisions. It is known to us all that language also has its ow n evolutionary process. W ith the help of numerous pragmatic strengthening, the new sen ses become a piece of sem antic item in the language users’ mental lexicon. If the new sense is opposite to one of the original ones, the ambivalent phenomenon appears. When people highlight the opposite as pects in the sam e word, the am bivalent words come into bein g. We should also pay attention to those ambivalent prefixes like over-, in- and so on, because they can help us identify the ambivalent words. There are some impacted standpoints about the sense forming mechanism of ambivalent words. Some foreign scholars and Jang Shuzhe n (2009) examine the diachronic evolution of the ambivalent words from the angle of etym ology. Shi Lu(2008)explores the ambivalent word’s motivation by using the cognitive image schema. Although the overseas scholars have studied this phenom enon for a long tim e, they only concern how to nam e them, such as antiphrasis, Janus words, self-antonym, auto-a ntonyms, and so on. Now let us review som e influential forming mechanism of the ambivalent words put forward by previous scholars first, and then we will try to analyze sense forming mechanism within ECM.

Conclusion
The views presented in this paper are novel and original both in the usage of ECM and the study of ambivalent words. The results of the study enjoy very significant theoretical and pragmatic importance besides. The author hopes this study can pave a new way for the future study on ambivalent words. Chapter Six will co nclude this thesis from four aspects. Firstly, we mainly discuss the findings of t he study in this chapter. Secondly, we will show how to apply the conclusions of this study into polyseme teaching and translation activities. Last, we will summary limitations of the study and list some further suggestions.This paper studies the ambivalent words from cognitive perspectives within ECM, which is a new perspective. This pape r reclassifies ambivalent words into five classes, among them the complementary relationship of am bivalent words is a new type, for the previous classifications of ambivalent words put fo rward by Wang Yin (2006) can not cover all the ambivalent words. Through the quantitative anal ysis of ambivalent words, we get to know that the distribution of ambivalent word class accords with human cognitive style. After studying the classifications and sense construction mechanism of ambivalent words we shall find that there are in trinsic relationships between clas sifications and sense construction mechanism. The classification pr ovides the instances for sense constructio n mechanism.
