Among 1417 papers, the studies on English ambivalent words only o ccupy around 260 papers, which is a very sm all part. Until 1995, scholars h ave begun to apply w estern linguistic theories to res earch ambivalent words. Shi Lu (2008) suggests th at language originates from the interrelated activities between human physical or social experiences getting from outside environment and the image schema which is f ormed in the b rain by conceptualization. These are the m ain cognitive sense construction mechanisms of ambivalent words. Jiang Shuzhen (2009a) studies the ambivalent words from diachronic pers pective. Jiang Shuzhe n (2009b) researches ambivalent words f rom the following four aspects: different cognitive subjects, different perspectives, different backgrounds and different salience. Yu Weishen & Ma Yongtian (2009) point out that the sub jective construal ability plays an important role in the process of conceptualization. They say that th e subjective profiling d ifferentiates prominence of the participants in a rela tionship to different degrees and then the various choices of specificity also give rise to the ambivalent phenom enon. Jiang Shuzhen (2010) also explores the ambivalent phenomenon from the perspective of iconicity in 2010. Later, Wu Shuqiong (2010) researches on the phenomenon from the point of metonymic theory and classifies ambivalent words into four types. She discovers that the opposite m eanings of ambivalent words are based on conceptual contiguity. The opposite meanings belong to the same conceptual domain and have characters of salie nce asymmetry. She holds th at metonymic motivation is the foundation of forming mechanism of the ambivalent words.
