摘要:The present study is set in the above situation in which academic writing in Englishfor Chinese graduate students of English has been attached great importance to whereasthe actual writing competence and writing results of these graduates are not satisfiedenough.
5. Discussion
5.1 English postgraduates' experiences in academic writing
Results of this study indicate that English postgraduates have different experience inacademic writing. The majorities of the students,namely those in-the-writing-processwriters, seem to be less satisfied with their academic writing experience and are morelikely to be unconfident in their writing outcomes. Whereas those "experienced" writerswho have already finished their dissertation seem to have a higher level of satisfactionwith their writing experience and have a more positive attitude towards their writingoutcomes and writing process,It reveals that writing practice and self-efficacy would play a significant role inEnglish postgraduates' academic writing experience. This finding echoes Phakiti and Li(2011). In their investigation, they argued that low level of self-efficacy was a keyindividual factor leading to EFL learners' academic difficulties. Similar to Phakiti and Li(2011),Rahilly (2004) also declared that ESL students with higher levels of self-efficacywere generally willing to believe that they would succeed in writing. In the present study,it is found that due to the practice of writing the dissertation, students leam to tackle withall kinds of difficulties in the complicated process and this brings to them a sense ofachievement. Therefore, these writers tend to be more confident in their ability toaccomplish the whole writing process and are more likely to be satisfied with theirwriting experience. On the contrary,without such kind of practice, students have moretroubles in dealing with a variety of challenges they face,which results in self-doubt intheir own abilities. This low level of self-efficacy affects students' experience inacademic writing.

Conclusion
Undertaken in the context of a Chinese university, the present study intends toexplore EFL learners' experiences in academic writing through interviewing of eightEnglish postgraduates. It focuses on English postgraduates' experience in academicwriting, challenges and difficulties they encounter in academic writing, the influencingfactors and suggestions to improve academic writing experience and outcomes.It concludes that EFL learners encounter different levels of challenges in academicwriting. The difficulties involve not only linguistic problems such as choice of words andexpressions, sentence patterns and paraphrasing, academic difficulties including choiceof topic,dealing with literature, data collection and analysis, discussion and arguing andreasoning in a logical way, but also other challenges such as time pressure and affectiveobstacles.
