The study of euphemisms from the perspective of rhetoric indeed produced agreat influence on euphemism studying. However, there exist some limitations in that thedefinition of euphemism is neither clear nor definite. In 1970s, social-linguistics cameinto being. Then many scholars studied euphemisms from the perspective ofsocial-linguistic view. For example, in 1983 Chen Yuan published his book SocialLinguistics. In this book the author not only mentioned the historical and socialbackground of euphemism, but also discovered the nature of this social phenomenon. Inthe next following years, a lot of Chinese scholars published many books on euphemismsfrom different perspectives. For example, Li Guonan published Euphemism in English in1989. Jiang Xihe published Euphemism in Modern English in 1983. Both of them studiedthe euphemism from a morphological view. They distinguished the classification ofeuphemism systematically and proposed the features of euphemisms. In 1989, WuTieping discovered one of the important features of euphemism construction in his bookThe Interpretive Capacity of the Theory of Fuzzy Linguistics Shown by the Devices ofEuphemism(从委婉语的机制看模糊理论的解释). Up to now, the scope of theeuphemisms study has been expanded. It is no longer limited to the lexical level. It hasbeen broadened to the area of non-lexical level. And a lot of importances have beenattached to its social functions which caused the attention of scholars both at home andabroad. However, the previous studies of euphemisms still have some shortcomings.

1. Definition and Redefinition of Euphemism
It is universally acknowledged that language is functioned as a tool for humancommunication. People use language to maintain social-relationship, to exchange theirideas, thoughts, to express feelings, attitudes and emotions and so on. So they formed awell-connected network from the very beginning of using languages. What if there is nolanguage? Then the world must be in a chaos. Therefore, language is very important forour human beings. However, people do not allowed to use language arbitrarily. Theremust be exists some rules that govern the use of the language just as our behaviors areprohibited by our society. People with close relationships can speak to each other freelyand can talk whatever they want without considering what will happen if the speakermentions some inappropriate topics. But what about the people who have never metbefore? Especially the people who come from different countries. Under thesecircumstances, people should not speak at their will. They should speak politely andappropriately. They should observe some rules and principles. When they talk aboutsome sensitive topics such as age, weight, religion, and the death and so on, the indirect,mild, vague and roundabout ways of expressions are preferred. Otherwise thecommunication will break down. In other words, euphemism is a common phenomenonof all languages.
