摘要:There is no doubt that teachers’ language cast great influence on students in thattheir language is the major source of students’ output of the target language. Students, with intention or without intention, imitate teachers’ behaviors and words, so aproficient teacher usually has excellent students.
Chapter V Results and Discussion
5.1 Frequencies of Teachers’ Turn-taking Strategies
Table 5.1 reveals that the distribution of data is not balanced, which implies thatthe strategies that the teacher adopts centered on the turn-yielding strategy of askingquestions and apparent pause. Other strategies appear only several times. The unbalance of the distribution of the data indicates that the teacher tends toturn to several turn-taking strategies, but ignores other strategies. There are tworeasons that lead to the result: Firstly, teachers have no enough time to select morewords to refine his speech despite the fact that he had prepare for the frame of thewhole class; secondly, every person has the habit of making use of certain expressionsmore frequently than the others, which can be proved by the pet phrase. Besides,turn-yielding strategy of slowing down is also useful in teaching process but TeacherA tends to speak comparatively quickly so that he prefers to use a long pause. Theturn-holding strategies of clarification and tangentialization are all useful strategies incommunications between teachers and students since teachers can use the twostrategies to control the teaching process.
…………
Conclusion
The turn-yielding strategy of asking a question is usually employed by Englishteachers and the strategy always observes the tact maxim and the generosity maxim.Sometimes, teachers may also observe the approbation maxim in order to encouragestudents to consider teachers’ questions. In addition, the teachers usually observe themaxims of relevance and manner since their methods of asking questions are effectiveenough, and the teachers may also violate the maxim of quantity as the students needno more information to complete the answers. It is possible for a teacher to violate themaxim of quality when the teacher intends to make the students realize their mistakes. This strategy is of great importance in that teachers can check whether students havefollowed the teachers and teachers can also force students to participate in theteaching activities when students lost their interest in the teaching content. Besides, when the students can not answer the questions correctly and fluently, teachersusually turn to the strategy of assistance and provide more clues for the students. Inthat case, the teacher usually observes the tact maxims and the approbation maim. However, the teacher should pay attention to the variation of their expressions whenthey adopt this strategy so that more students can be attracted, and their expressionswill set a good example for foreign language learners.
