iphthongs. This is a big problem when the Chinesestudents study English interlanguage system. The previous research results led us to amore detailed understanding of the vowels nature and features. Through theobservation of Chinese college students’English vowel acquisition process, as well asthe differences and similarities of English and Chinese vowel system, we have foundsome problems in the vowel acquisition process. Therefore, this paper uses thetraditional perception experiment, supplemented by modern acoustics researchmethods, based on the study of English and Chinese vowel differences andsimilarities to find out the Chinese college students’ English vowel pronunciationcharacteristic and difficulty pronouncing phonemes.

2.1.1 RPsound system
Since RP (Received Pronunciation) is first recommended to use by the BritishBroadcasting Company (BBC), it has excited least prejudice of a regional kind, andbeen identified in the public mind as “BBC English”. This form of pronunciation ismostly described and discussed in books of British pronunciation and has been taughtto Chinese students for a long period of time.At present day RP has three main types: 1) Conservative RP, used by the certainprofessions, older generation traditionally or social groups; 2) General RP, used byBBC; 3) Advanced RP, used by young people of exclusive social group (AC. Gimson1980). For emergent pronunciation is often unstable, the chosen model for study inthis thesis would sensibly be general RP.There are many systems for transcribing the English vowels. In this thesis, Itranscribe the English vowels according to Gimson’s system.
People’s speech organ can produce many sounds, only a small amount of themconsist of phoneme system of our language. Vowels are the hero on stage of speaking.The source-filter theory of vowel production (Fant 1970) considers vowel productionas a combination of two factors. The vocal folds restrict the flow of air through thepharynx, producing vibration and sound. The sound passes through the oral cavity,where it resonates. The shape of the oral cavity makes the sound resonate at specificfrequencies. The combination of the resonating frequencies produces a vowel sound.The speaker can change the shape of the oral cavity by altering the position of the jaw,tongue and lips, to produce different resonant frequencies that are perceived asdifferent vowel sounds (Ashby and Maidment 2005: 70-72).The wide variety of vowel sounds that can be produced is attributed to the abilityto vary the position of the tongue, lips and jaw. It is the filter that makes vowel soundsdistinctive. Besides, the quality of the source is also affected by physiological factorssuch as age, gender and size of the vocal tract. The speaker’s filter, which changeswith the shape of the oral cavity, determines which vowel is produced.
