Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Chinglish
Chinglish is spoken or written English language which is influenced by theChinese language. Therefore, Chinglish always occurs inevitably to Chineselearners when they acquire English. Some researchers both at home and abroad payattention to the related studies on Chinglish. But the comprehensive and systematicstudy on the forms and causes of Chinglish has never been achieved. However, thisdoes not mean that Chinglish in English teaching should be ignored. Englishteaching researchers and educators should conduct studies on Chinglishsystematically in order to improve learner’s English proficiency. Nevertheless, owing to the unsystematic and instable nature of Chinglish, people could notdefinitely tell what Chinglish is and expound various definitions from differentperspectives with their own understanding. In order to find the solutions tominimizing Chinglish, we should have a clear idea of what Chinglish is. In order tohave a deeper insight into the definition of Chinglish, different versions arepresented by different researchers as follows:Deng Yanchang & Liu Runqing (1989:115) remarked “Chinglish is speech orwriting in English that shows the interference or influence of Chinese. Somesentences may be little more than word for word translations of Chinese expressions.Chinglish may be grammatically correct, but the choice of words or phrases and themanner of expressions do not conform to Standard English usage. Althoughunderstanding may not be a problem, Chinglish is unacceptable”.Li Wenzhong (1993) proposed that Chinglish is the abnormal or deformedEnglish which is produced by Chinese English learners or users when they areinfluenced by Chinese language rules. This kind of English is not understood andaccepted by native English speakers.

2.2 Theoretical foundation of the study
Chinglish is a deformed language phenomenon, which occurs when ChineseEnglish learners can not transfer from Chinese meaning to English words. Thislanguage phenomenon can be classified into the field of second languageacquisition. What is more, as an abnormal language form, Chinglish is not acceptedby native English speakers, but like the normal language form, it is also asuperficial manifestation of cognitive construction and it is the consequence of ourability for double spaces integration. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce theconceptual blending theory. In the following parts, the relevant theoreticalbackground about Chinglish will be explored. According to Ellis (1999), second language acquisition (SLA) stands incontrast to L1 acquisition. It is the study of how learners learn an additionallanguage after they have acquired their mother tongue. According to Gass &Selinker (2007), SLA refers to the process of learning another language after thenative language (NL) has been learned. Sometimes the term refers to the learning ofa third or fourth language. Therefore, according to the researchers, the “secondlanguage” (L2) can refer to any language learned after learning the NL, regardlessof whether it is the second, third, fourth, or fifth language.
