Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Previous studies on China English abroad and at home
Since the latter half of the 20th century, the rapid development of informationtechnology has been changing the way of our life and socio-cultural patterns. Englishhas gradually evolved into an international language and has developed from a nativelanguage of an island to a language of the world. British English and American Englishare not the only two varieties or Standard English any more. Many new Englishvarieties emerge in the world. The plural form of English here means the differentvarieties of English in different social and cultural contexts. Since then, anoverwhelming interest in World Englishes caused huge changes in the study of Englishvarieties worldwide. Without doubt, Kachru is a pioneer among the scholars studyingWorld Englishes. He studied Indian English within the framework of contextualparameters. Under his influence, studies of non-native varieties of English flourishedincluding those varieties in the outer circle, for instance, Singaporean English, NigerianEnglish, Indian English, Malaysian English and so on. The internationalization ofEnglish provides the possibility of language contact of English with the local language.That means these varieties of English have been nativized or localized by integrating thefeatures of their own native language such as sounds, intonation patterns, words,setphrases and sentence structures, and some domestic communicative rules into English.The establishment and development of China English is the result of constant contact ofEnglish and Chinese and Chinese cultures.
Kachru (1982/1992) has ever discussed English in China from the perspectives ofhistory and culture in his collections: The Other tongue: English across cultures. He putit like this: English in China represented China's social and political situation. Thepattern of Chinese variety of English is quite clear: English in China requires moreChinese elements when China is inward-looking; English will be more like the standardin the west when China is outward-searching. It could be shown in this statement thatKachru to some extent acknowledged the English variety in China. Then J.B.Pride(1988: 41-70) expressed his disagreement with Kachru by saying that the typicalChinese features in Chinese variety of English were the result of interference errors4 transferred from Chinese. Afterward, linguists and scholars have gradually developedlots of researches on China English from various angles such as the area of linguisticsrepresented by A. Kirkpatrick's concentration on the micro-linguistics including thepronunciation, vocabulary, sentence, and discourse. In the following years, K. Boltonpublished a paper about China English in 2002 and in the next year he wrote a booknamed Chinese Englishes~-A Sociolinguistic history,which both did contributions tothe studies on China English from perspectives of history and linguistics; A. Kirkpatrick(2002) paid his attention to China English from the sociolinguistic perspective; somescholars like Hang Zhang (2002) and Agnes Lam (2002) changed their attention to theliteratures; Niu Qiang & Martin Wolff (2003) studied the policy of English teaching inChina.
