peans, the Europeans considered the Africans as a lower-grade race. Because the Africa people’s intelligence from the whole is lower than white people in that time, in addition, most of them lacked education, and they were thought without having the same rights with the whites living in America. From that time on, the racism started to grow.
Today, the period of slave-trade has passed, but the racism is a spontaneously obvious response, whose effects can still be felt more than a century after its abolition.
Slavery is not the racism’s product; by contrast, the racism is the product of slavery. The slavery had been abolished but the black people still suffer different extents of discrimination. Therefore, the problem has less to do with the prohibition of laws than with the change of people’s mentality and conception.
C. Gender Discrimination
Gender discrimination is one of the killers of black women’s identity, which is never to be forgotten. It’s misfortunate to be a black, but it’s even worse to be a woman at the same time.
Women’s social status should not be ignored from the basic angle; they are playing an important role in human beings’ reproduction, and they are the heroines when the society is evolving. However, women had been treated unfairly since the very ancient time when a family’s survival in the wild was determined by strong males, which made the males dominate the females. The men thought the women were inferior to them, and the females could only do some simple work like cooking, bringing up children. In short, the men wanted the women to be a docile housewife. Therefore, this kind of great mothers began to be dominated by men just because they looked smaller and weaker than men. From that time on, the women began to obey the men’s arrangement step by step, and their rights were deprived as well. However, the women didn’t realize it’s an abyss
At present, some males think that the empathy, tolerance, insight, patience and persistence are the birthright of female. These qualities the women naturally have might be produced because of the suppression by men. With the emergence of human rights, some women realized that everyone is equal and they must fight for their freedom. Betty Friedan had written, as well, “I want something more than my husband and my children and my home”. (Wang,2005:256), which can be called a baptism for female.
But, after all, the men’s domination in the families is almost accepted by everyone. In other words, getting their freedom will be a long-term and harder process. “It is dogged that does it”. In spite of that, they didn’t decide to bear it in silence but they made a great effort to get their equal rights in the society, and also have got some achievements.
Nowadays those female rights have been admitted by the law after the Women’s Movement. When many females feel relieved at getting their freedom and enter the society to do their wanted work, they find the female is still a weaker group in the men’s eyes. It shows that the prejudice against female is an idea that still strikes nearly all men. Despite this, many people think that the road to women’s equality is much rougher than that of the blacks.
III. Methods of Helping Black Women out of Straits
A. Recovery of Economic and Spiritual Independence
It is hard to eliminate the prejudice against women, because women in the U.S. are much more brainwashed and content with their roles as second-class citizens than blacks ever. So
