Textbooks are the central teaching material of English courses, also they are the mainresources of the knowledge that students should learn. So it is very crucial that a textbookincludes learning strategies in an appropriate way.In respect of textbooks for strategy training, there is no authoritative or populartextbook that involves systematic vocabulary learning strategies for junior high schools.The existing textbooks do not provide comprehensive or systematic vocabulary learningstrategies for junior high school English teachers to refer to. Even though with theimplementation of new curriculum reform, learning strategies attract more and moreattention and in the mean time, one of the goals proposed the National English Curriculum(2001, p.6) is to help students to form effective learning strategies including cognitivestrategies, self-management strategies, communication strategies and resourcing strategies,strategy training is not common to be seen in the practical English classroom, especially injunior high schools. It is certainly not appropriate to say that those textbooks do not touchupon or embody learning strategies. Some of them do include some strategies directly inthe form of giving "Tips", for example, Senior English for Schools Student's Book One(Yang Xiaoyu, 2010) published by Chongqing University Press, and some other textbooksprovide strategies in the form of "Learning to learn,,, taking English Student's Book One(Chen & Greenall, 2006) published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press forexample.


Chapter TwoLiterature Review


The widely recognized learning strategies play a critical and positive part in languagelearning, and they have become the focus of a great deal of interest due to the followingthree ideas. Firstly, teachers' traditional roles in language teaching have changed to variedroles while the role of students has shifted to the center of language learning, emphasizingwhat students are able do to help themselves with language learning. Secondly, it hasbecome clear that individual differences exist among different learners. Thirdly, languagelearning demands a lot of out-side-the-classroom efforts. Students are required to manageby themselves, which demands the students to have a high level of learner autonomy. Allthese views point to the great importance of learning strategies. (Cotterall & Reinders,2007, p.vi)


2,1 Language Learning Strategie


2.1.1 The Definitions of Language Learning Strategies
Firstly, there is necessity to understand what language learning strategies are. Thereare a variety of definitions given by key figures in the field from the different aspects andat various levels.Early on, according to Tarone (1983, p.67), a learning strategy is "an attempt todevelop linguistic and sociolinguistic competence in the target language—to incorporatethese into one's interlanguage competence". Rubin (1987, p.22) says that learningstrategies are "strategies which contribute to the development of the language systemwhich the learner constructs and affect learning directly". It is clear that Tarone's andRubin,s definitions are given to a broad sense.
