Conclusion


To sum up,the author thinks that the following grammar items are suitable for theGrammar Translation Method,such as, Non- Finite Verbs,and Inversion, EmphaticSentences etc,while Attributive Clause,Subjunctive Mood,Tense and Voice,DirectSpeech and Indirect Speech,etc are suitable for the Communicative Approach.However, a single Grammar Translation Method or Communicative Approach,has its own advantages and disadvantages. The two methods can be complementary,aimed at developing students' abilities to master granmiar knowledge and grammarapplication, which at the same time accords with the present situation of middleschool students learning grammar. The grammar teaching examples of the twomethods also show that it is feasible to combine the two kinds of methods. Therefore,whether in theory or in practice,combining Grammar Translation Method andCommunicative Approach can have better effects than a single teaching method.
Of course, there is no '"universal" teaching method. Each kind of teaching methodhas its own background. Every new method is based on the reflection andmodification of the past teaching method. So we should treat each teaching method ina wise way,and constantly enrich and perfect them in accordance with the demandsof foreign language teaching as related subjects develop. In short,the Englishgrammar teaching is an organic part of the language teaching. With the developmentof human language knowledge and language use,the organization of natural languagegrammar will change as well. Grammar teaching never simply center on explaininggrammar knowledge, but should be a link of the ability of using language, thusbecoming a means of developing students' communicative ability.
