1.2 The Reasons, Purpose and Significance of the Research
Grammar teaching has been a hot issue in foreign language teaching. In China,for a long time, the Grammar Ttranslation Method is one of the main ways of teachingEnglish. And graminar is very important in learning a foreign language. However,many people cannot speak a single word, let alone they use English forcommunication even after they have been studying English for many years. Thereason is that the Grammar Translation Method ignores students' communicativecompetence. In recent years, as the Communicative Approach is introduced to ourcountry, training the communicative competence becomes the main goal of theEnglish teaching. The effect of grammar has been weakened. However,the Englishgrammar teaching mode which only uses Communicative Approach does not reachthe desired goal. After a period of practice and introspection, people finally realizethat weakening or even canceling grammar teaching has caused many disadvantages.And then many scholars begin to think that the Grammar Translation Method shouldbe combined with the Communicative Approach.
At present, most English educators in high school can agree that the GrammarTranslation Method should be combined with the Communicative Approach and thatway is also suitable for high school students to leam English grammar. But they fail topoint out clearly that which grammar items are more suitable for the GrammarTranslation Method and which items are more suitable for the CommunicativeApproach. This thesis attempts to find a more suitable way for middle school studentsin China to study English grammar by using the classification teaching mode,.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 The Present Study of English Grammar Teaching inMiddle School
Grammar teaching has been playing an important role in English teaching of highschool in China,so there are different methods for it. Domestic educational circles putforward a number of grammar teaching methods one after another. The following arereviews of the present study of English grammar teaching in middle school.


2.1.1 Research on Classification of Teaching
In today's education circle, a lot of people study classification teaching, such as “Tu Xiao Chun,according to the function of language itself,students' characteristics,and interests, students are divided into listening, speaking, reading and writingCategorized Class. And through the discussion,they search for the theory basis, thussearching the feasibility of classification teaching. Ding Hong Zhen thinks: teachingbased on the classification of learning advantages teaching can make students in thelearning process develop their respective advantages and avoid improper ways that .students absorb knowledge. Zhang Gui Ping holds that classification method can beadopted according to the characteristics of that English idioms, learners' age,thefiinction of context,the native language interference factors in the teaching of Englishidioms.
