In 1961, some London architecture students published 1st issue of Archigram, an architectural journal aiming to settling social and living problems by ways of cutting edge technologies. When talking about modern renowned British architecture, Shard London Bridge (or the Shard), is one that could hardly be ignored. It is not a bridge, but a 72-storey skyscraper, the name ‘Shard London Bridge’ coming from its base upon the subway station of “London Bridge”. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the Shard reaches the height of 310 meters, the highest building in the European Union. It has elegant appearance consisting of steel and glass; the glass on the outside, tilting with different angles, reflect the changing sky view of London. When the spire is open the whole building looks like a castle up in the sky. It is said that the designer got the inspiration from the towering church spires in London, as well as the ship masts over River Thames. The Shard is actually a 'vertical city', with facilities like hotels, offices, residential flats, shops, cafe restaurants, etc. There lies an observatory between 68th and 72nd floor, where the view of London can be best appreciated on sunny days. Visitors are expected to amount 500,000 per year. Shard London bridge has opened a new era for mega-high-rise buildings and has become one of the well-known landmark of the city.
