Chapter OneIntroduction
Being widely spoken, English plays a crucial role in global communication. Because ofthe large population of China, large-size class is generally applied in most areas. With thiskind of class, English teaching comes in a dilemma. As a new language of students’, not all ofthem perceive it in the same way, and the duration of their perceiving differ. Therefore, it isnecessary to apply differentiated instruction in classes. Studies at home and abroad haveshown that most students can benefit from proper differentiating teaching and cooperativeteaching. Group activities as the main means of cooperative learning are commonly used inmiddle school classes. However, what kind of group activities can work effectively in thebackground of differentiating teaching and cooperative learning needs to be further studied.
1.1 Research Background
Nowadays, with the rapid development of globalization, English as the most widelyspoken language in the world has very great influence on the economy, politics and culture allover the world. The Phase of Compulsory
Education plays an important role within onestudent’s learning process.As English Curricular Standards in the Phase of Compulsory Education mentions,English Teaching should be geared to the needs of all students and lay a foundation ofintegrated and lifelong development of them. Teachers should admit every student’sdifference in their daily teaching process. For each student’s best development, teachersshould base on students’ status and personalities to differentiate their teaching. So howEnglish teaching makes an effect on every student needs to be solved.However, the school where the author took an internship at is a public school, and thesource of students is complicated. The knowledge base and cognitive level of them aredifferent to a certain degree. What’s more, the English learning level polarizes seriouslywithin one class. Some of the students have no interest in English at all. With this situationgoing on, the students who have no interest will doze or even do nothing over class time,while the others are following teacher’s pace. In order to change the above situation and forthe sake of Grade 9 students upcoming senior high school entrance examination, teachers of that school decided to set a differentiating ELT among the students after a period ofdiscussion.In traditional classrooms, a teacher speaks a lot as a lead character, while students listenas supporting players. Students are neglected in this mode, therefore, their initiative andenthusiasm for learned are limited. Bringing out new teaching methods is imperative undersuch a circumstance. Cooperative Learning is a main trend teaching theory and
strategy,which is also advocated in curriculum reform in our country. How to develop cooperativelearning in class remains a hot issue among the scholars.Middle school English classes may be one of the most developed places of cooperativelearning. Because English as a second language, teachers may carry out different classroomactivities to arouse students’ interest and change their attitudes towards English, especiallygroup work activities.Based on the background of differentiating teaching in Grade 9, Teacher A, who is theauthor’s internship tutor, adopts differentiating teaching in one of her classes.
