This given article by Phil Taylor and Peter Bain (2005), discusses on the off shoring of call centre services to developing countries specifically to India, from the western countries as because of cheaper workforce. The essay will be dealing with analysing the research, thereby analysing on the same as well as giving a critique upon it. The essay will also look into the range of literature for analysing the research design and approach as well would find out and evaluate the shortcomings of the approach. Apart from this, so as to make a comparison of the research work the essay will also take reference and comparison from other related research work done in the same area. At the end, essay would suggest on alternative research strategies or method which can be useful in analysing the context of discussion.
The article in question, by Phil Taylor and Peter Bain, discusses the working and prospect of call centre services in Scotland and India. The authors of the article have worked on identifying and studying the labours forces of Indian call centres by analysing the political economic condition of country which has an impact on the business, thereby driving the call centre business from UK to India. In the past, many a studies have been done for the same subject area dealing with different aspects, whereas in this article it has been focussed on the difficulties and challenges faced during the off-shoring. Thus, giving a comparison in between the processes in UK and India by means of qualitative research approach. The article was published in a journal titled 'Work, Employment and Society' which deals with studies and research on different fields by following up quantitative and qualitative approach (Work, Employment and Society, n.d.).
The authors of the article selected a too broad subject to do research on, as there is no any outline provided for the scope of the research as such. They approached via variety of sources and methods for their research, which is mainly qualitative. They gathered data from Indian cities Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai during January-February and June 2003 as well they got permission to access seven call centre for doing qualitative research through the help of NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Service Company). The different methods used for evidence gathering were through case studies, extended semi structure interviews, observations, group discussions, formal and informal interviews, attending industry conferences, extensive documentation on Indian developments as well as detailed questionnaire. Moreover, it can be seen from the article that the authors asked NASSCOM to provide them with sample of call centres of third party operations with different company sizes and dealing with separate sectors.
