Conclusion
As for EFL learners at a low proficiency level,English textbooks are the onlysource of English input. It is suggested that most English books highlight thecollocations appearing in texts. Textbook writers and publishers should take these intoaccount to improve EFL learners’ collocation competence. For instance, collocationsappearing in textbooks can be made salient in some way. In addition, they should bepracticed repeatedly in meaningful contexts. First of all, the number of subjects in this research are restricted to 150, 50 GradeTwo high school students and 100 English majors (50 freshmen and 50 juniors).Though the difference of three groups’ performance on collocation tests is quitesignificant, further studies can expand the scope of participants. What’s more, the present study focuses on Chinese EFL learners’ acquisition of verb-noun collocation,so the subjects are limited to Chinese-speaking homogenous group. It is possible toextend the study of subjects with different L1 backgrounds.
