ee different tense in it and even used three tense in one sentence. The following phrases reflects the flowing of theme and tense which are used in the second paragraph: our thoughts (present tense)--mark (past tense)--people who had this house before us (past tense)--they (past tense)--I (present tense)--one (future tense)--they (past tense)--he (past tense)--one (present tense)--one (present tense). In this paragraph, the author used past tense in writing about" people who had the house before us", use present tense in writing "I ", and used future tense in writing something may happen. From it, "my" conscious shuttles back and forth among past, present and future alternately in this article to make the memory, reality and yearning of the character harmonious, and also make the character's conscious go freely like a burning kaleidoscope. 3.4 The applying of rich modal verbs The applying of modal verb presents the author's judgment about the mood and the voice in the involved contents (张德禄,1998:218). The author applied a lot of modal verbs in this novel, such as: "must ","can ", "might", "should", "could", "may" etc.. All of these model verbs express that "my” conscious was in an uncertain statement. "I" was not sure what "I" was thinking; “I” have to let them go freely. For example: "... it must have been the winter time..." (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1916); "It (the mark) may even be caused by some round black substance..." (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1917); "The song of birds must sound very loud and strange in June..." (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1918). What's more, modal adverbs also send uncertainty to the readers, for example: "Men perhaps, should you be a woman..." (Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1918); "...that seems to press the rapidity of life, the perpetual waste and repair..."(Virginia Woolf, 1993: 1918). Conclusion In English fiction, the novel of stream-of-consciousness was represented by James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Those novels broke through the bounds of time and space, and depicted vividly and skillfully the unconscious activity of the mind, fast changing and flowing incessantly. Particularly, the hesitant, misted distracted and illusory psychology people had when they faced reality. The thesis presents the unique devices, unique structure and artistic charm of language in Virginia Woolf's The Mark on the Wall to analyze the technique of the stream-of-consciousness novel, and helps the readers have a better understanding when reading novels of stream-of-consciousness. In stream-of-consciousness novel, interior monologue is applied as the record of the author’s inner reality, and images are applied as the carrier of the author’s thoughts. By this way, the innermost feelings and uncertain thoughts reappeared vividly and meticulously under the author’s pen. Time and space order is not used in regular way, which shows that the cognition process of human is instant and intangible. The using of philosophical sentences, descriptive language, different tense and rich modal verb makes the novel constant, vivid, abnormal and mystical. Bibliography [1] Allen, Walter.
