ABSTRACT
The goal of this study was to describe locum tenens physicians in the context of
contingent, nonstandard employment in the US. The target population for this studywas 1662 physicians who accepted at least one locum tenens assignment. Responserate for the 50-item questionnaire was 47 percent. One third of respondents considereda locum tenens practice pattern permanent. Female physicians were younger anddisproportionately represented in primary care specialism; 64 percent usedlocum income as sole source of support and were motivated by a need for flexiblescheduling. Male locum physicians were older, weighted toward the sub-specialisms and
motivated to practice part-time. Overall, locum physicians were satisfied with contingentwork. Shifts towards part-time employment among women and a desire for flexibilityare changing the nature of physician employment. Locum physicians, as ‘gold collar’contingent workers are very different from contingent workers in manufacturing andservice sectors of the economy.

The growth of the temporary staffing industry (TSI) has been both productand producer of the restructuring and deregulation of the US labour market(Peck and Theodore, 2002; Smith, 1998). The TSI represents a third-partycontracting entity intervening between jobseekers and employers (Kallebergand Reynolds, 2000), allowing employers to meet temporary or seasonal fluctuationsin demand for products or services and overcoming personnel changeabilitydue to training, vacation, voluntary and involuntary departure, illness,
or death. The ‘rightsizing’ of the labour force, as an extension of just-in-timeproduction systems, necessitates flexibility in staffing (Parker, 1994; Peck andTheodore, 2002). To facilitate flexibility, employers purchase the services of
individuals without assuming responsibilities normally associated with theempl本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
