Chapter One is an introduction that clarifies the background of the research including the research necessity, purpose, significance and layout of the thesis.  Chapter Two is the literature review with two parts included. The first part is the working  definitions  of  some  key  terms  related  with  this  study.  The  second  part  is review of textbook evaluations by foreign and domestic scholars. Chapter Three is an introduction of the evaluation criteria used in this research in detail  and  methodology  including  research  subjects,  questionnaire  and  interview designs and NSE used in Zhucheng City.  Chapter  Four  is  a  detailed  analysis  of  NSE  based  on  the  requirements  of  NECS from  the  aspects  of  language  knowledge,  cultural  awareness,  learning  and  teaching strategies,  affects  and  attitudes,  language  skills,  and  an  analysis  and  discussion  of  the results  of  questionnaires  and  interviews  from  the  aspects  of  teachers  and  students, textbook, comprehensive language ability, utilization of curriculum resources, English learning  effects.  By  analyzing  NSE  and  presenting  statistics  in  a  contrastive  way between  rural  and  urban  schools,  the  author  of  this  research  tries  to  find  some problems of NSE used in rural and urban schools. Chapter  Five  is  the  conclusion  which  summarizes  the  research  and  makes suggestions  for  teachers,  compilers  and  Educational  Administrative  Department. Limitations  of  this  research  are  pointed  out and suggestions for further  study  are  also made.

Chapter Two   Literature Review  

This part first discusses the related definitions and key terms, and then reviews the previous  studies  for  the  purpose  of  justifying  the  present  study.  It  will  focus  on textbooks,  the  evaluation  of  textbooks  and  the  analysis  of  NSE.  Then,  evaluation criteria in this research are presented.   

2.1 Textbook  
Wang (2000) holds the view that all materials used in class are teaching materials, such  as  tapes,  video  tapes,  CDs,  dictionaries,  grammar  books,  textbooks,  exercise books,  teachers’  books,  copies,  flash  cards,  newspapers,  photos,  advertisements,  TV programs.  The  definition  of  materials  has  its  broad  and  narrow  sense  according  to Cheng (2002).
