Leadership theories
According to John W Newstrom, 'Leadership is the process of influencing and supporting others to work enthusiastically toward achieving objectives.'
Now a day's leadership theories focus on the qualities the differentials between the leaders and followers by giving emphasis on various variables such as situational factors and skill levels. There are major eight types of leadership theories they are briefly discussed below:
Early leadership theories focused on what qualities distinguished between leaders and followers, while subsequent theories looked at other variables such as situational factors and skill levels. While many different leadership theories have emerged, most can be classified as one of eight major types:
'Great Man' Theories:
This is the oldest theories of leadership this theory express that capacity of leadership is natural and leaders are born, not made.
Trait Theories:
This theory believes that several traits, physical, intellectual, personality characteristics defines successful and unsuccessful leaders. As a result researches were made on various cognitive skills such as intelligence, ambition, aggressiveness etc.
John Gardner researched many leaders of North America and listed the attributes and characteristics of leaders. These traits are as follows:
Intelligence and judgments based on actions
Physical stamina and a vital driving force
Task competency
Better understanding of the followers and their demands
Avidness to accept responsibilities
Ability to deal with people
Capability to motivate people
Trustworthy
Conclusiveness
Flexibility
Contingency Theories:
The positive, participative, considerate leadership style is not always the best style to use. There are always exceptions and a good leader need to know how to use different leadership style in different situation. Now researchers started exploring the behavior of the leaders and made assumptions that the traits and the leadership qualities are not inherited, they can be learned and mastered by any person. A number of models have been developed that explain these exceptions and they are called contingency approaches. Some famous models are:
Fiedler's Contingency Model
Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Model
Path-Goal Model of Leadership
Vroom's Decision-Making Model
These model states that the most appropriate style of leadership depends on an analysis of the nature of the situation facing the leader. In this theory a leader must find out the key factor of the situation.
Situational Theories:
Situational theories propose that leaders choose the best course of action based upon situational variables. Different styles of leadership may be more appropriate for certain types of decision-making.
Behavioral Theories:
The behavioral theory believes that leaders are not born they can be made. Behavioral theory emphasis on the leader's mental qualities and other internal factors. As a successful leader is assessed, a lead
