Chapter One In troduction
In chapter one, the author introduces the background of the research, the significanceand the purpose of the study, and the overall structure of the study. Then the lexical chunks inEnglish reading teaching are mentioned. Finally, the English four skills such as speaking andvocabulary teaching provide an overview of the developments of the studies.
1.1 Back ground of The Study
With the social modern development of China, English has become more and morepopular. It is no doubt that English has become a major subject for students in senior highschool. The Criterion of the English Teaching Syllabus demands four basic skills of alanguage learning and it includes listening, speaking, reading and writing, especially theability of reading. As it is known, reading is one of the most important part in English exams,in particular, it also play an important role in the examination of the college entrance, andEnglish reading takes a large amount in the test paper. Students can make an improvement ontheir competence of the linguistic ability after they have done lots of reading passages in theprocess of learning English.As it is known, reading is a process of input and it is important for students in theirlanguage learning and students can gain lots of information they need through the process ofreading. At the same time, students can get the useful information to enrich theircomprehensive knowledge and improve their abilities on English reading. It provides anefficient and important way of language learning for students’ linguistic competence.However, there are some common problems in English reading class in senior highschool. The teachers concentrate more on the grammar teaching rather than give studentsmore reading skills about the reading comprehension, so they do not get good results not onlyin teaching but also in learning. The main reason is that the teachers often use traditionalteaching method and they usually put more emphasis on the grammar points while thestudents doing the daily exercises and having the tests. The students’ English learninginterests and self-confidence are not developed and the students’ basic reading skills are notwell trained. The students often spend a lot time on English reading and doing a lot ofexercises, but they don’t get satisfying results. In English teaching class, teachers teachthrough the class, and students play a passive role in the process of learning. In addition, oneof the reasons is that the reading materials are not scientific, that is, the materials are notrelated to the real language environment. The students’ English learning interests andself-confidence decreases in a general way. In the meanwhile, most of the students can nothave a good command of the proper reading strategies and skills. They have problems inreading passages and they spend more time on the exercises of the reading comprehension.The students can not gain the main information of the passage in a correct way. And one ofthe common problems is that the information they grasp is mainly about the vocabulary andthe literal meanings, so they can not have a better understanding of the whole readingpassage.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Since English has become more and more important in China, it becomes a majorsubject in senior high school. The English reading covers about a half of scores of the wholepaper in many tests. The teachers
