enior high school English reading,which has profound significance in the following ways:Firstly, the thesis is based on the Dual Coding Theory applied in the high school English readingteaching, which is adapted to the new ordinary high school English curriculum standards (2003) and basedon the cognitive development in the proposed developing demand. Senior high school English curriculumemphasize on the further development of the comprehensive ability to use language, and focus on theimprovement of students’ access to information in English and the ability to analyze problems andproblem-solving skills.Secondly, teachers and students can be influenced by the study of DCT. For the teacher, the teacherswill become more effective in the instructions under the guidance of DCT. The teachers should inspirestudents to develop their awareness of using images in their EFL reading. In traditional language teachingprocess, they often explain the language points when they are explaining the texts. In order to improvelearner’s comprehensibility, teachers can lead the students to pay more attention to the nonverbal elements.These elements have been ignored before all the time. In the reading process, students are asked to formmental images, which can attended some emotional responses more or less, and in turn improve thestudent’s comprehensibility. For the student, the reading process sometimes is very boring as well asdifficult. If students are guided to use both the verbal and nonverbal systems in reading, it will becomeeasier and more interesting in the reading process. They will find it is very interesting which can be formedsome pictures in their mind, just like looking a movie. For example, when someone ask you a person, firstyour mind will come to the persons, face, eyes and other features. Then you will think about how todescribe the pictures accurately.

2.1 Definition of Reading
Reading is a mental process through brain processing, information understanding, and the readersprocess and understand the mentality of the author’s thoughts and feelings through the perception of writtensymbols with the knowledge of the language, social and cultural background knowledge and readingstrategies. And it is a positive, dynamic cognitive process to tentative, confirm, imagine, and reasonconstantly.The process of English learning and application is information transmission, understanding, absorption,analysis, processing, communication, expression and display. Linguistic psychology research tells us thatthe novice speakers in the early stages usually need a lot of language input and understand by internallanguage system, absorbing and processing, and then converted into a certain external language. Usually,the primary spoken language (i.e., listening and speaking) is more important than secondary writtenlanguage, and gradually increase the input of written language, which is reading. Reading is an active,positive thinking process, and a process of interaction between old and new information in the human brainand reaction.
