Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Previous Research on EFL Reading
Reading comprehension is the basal core of other five skills in learning foreign English.Through reading, readers not only can get the relevant language information and materials butalso can enhance language intuition and improve language consciousness of the languagelearners. Ding Yanren (2004) shows clearly that most of Chinese learners manage to improvetheir English by reading rather than having a dialogue or conversation practice. Hence, it isnecessary and significant for us to do some research on reading.Before the 1970s, reading theories regarded reading as the process of the decoding oflanguage and readers‘ constructing meaning from words, phrases, and sentences. However,with the development of the cognitive theory, people gradually pay attention hownon-linguistic factors influence reading comprehension. For example, the related theorieswhich are applied to EFL teaching include Schema Theory, Constructivist Theory, RelevanceTheory, Meta-cognitive Theory, Task-based teaching Theory, Narrow-reading Theory,Cooperative Learning Theory, Discourse-based reading Theory and so on.

2.2 Reading Models
Reading is an indispensable cognitive activity of the human society. The inheritance ofhuman knowledge is basically achieved through reading comprehension activities. Therefore,research between reading activities and reading models caught the people's interest earlier.And foreign scholars thought highly of reading research. At the beginning of the twentiethcentury, some scholars began to try to know about the reading process .With the developmentsof cognitive psychology, cognitive linguistics, applied linguistics, text linguistics, westernlinguists have come up with some fairly valuable theories on reading. Psychologistsdistinguish three kinds of generally recognized reading models. And they are put into use toexplain how readers read. Bottom-up model, Top-down model, and the more perfectInteractive model have a greater effect on reading.

5.1 Data Collection
The writer designs several channels for data collection rather than relying purely onquantitative figures, in order to avoid over-relying on one final evaluation, the writer followedup students‘performance in EC periodically. The following are the data tables. 100 questionnaires are handed out, and all are handed in, so it‘s easy for the writer tocollect the data.
