Personal Statement

Your PERSONAL STATEMENT is a very important part of your application. As many of you will have heard from the university representatives who have visited COACE this week, Admissions Officers will consider the following factors when deciding whether or not to accept you:

1. Your high-school scores (for undergraduates) and your university GPA (for postgraduates);
2. Your score on the ABP (foundation programme);
3. Your language level (IELTS or TOEFL score);
4. Your experiences (work, voluntary jobs, clubs/activities); and
5. Your Personal Statement

In November, you will be given some help by your teachers on how to write a good Personal Statement. It is vital, however, that you begin to find out information yourself.

I suggest that you:

1. Go to the London School of Economics (LSE) website where you will find a lot of information on how to write a good Personal Statement (https://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/undergraduateAdmissions/AdmissionsCriteria/UCAS%20personal%20statement/general_information.htm) OR type in “personal statement LSE” to google.
2. Make a list of the things you wish to include in your Personal Statement. Why not consider the following:

Topics to include in your personal statement:  

Your reason for choosing this subject:
When did you decide?
What / who influenced you?
What do you find most interesting about this subject?

Why you want to study in the UK/USA/Canada/Australia?
What evidence do you have that you can complete a degree in English? Are any of your studies completed in English?
Have you had a position of authority or used your communication skills effectively? For instance, are you on the school debating team?

Your background:  
Any experience related to the subject you want to study
Any books or articles that you have read that is connected to your subject area.
Work experience (if related).

Your future plans:   
Especially how this course will help you / fits into your future plans.
What is your ambition and how will this course help you to reach it?
If you are not sure what you would like to do in the future, what useful skills will you be able to take from this course and apply to whatever you choose to do?

Interests / Achievements / Skills that you have gained outside of the classroom:
The university wants active, well rounded people who are interested in a range of things. If you can, try to show a range of different activities – e.g. something with a group, something alone, something active, something passive….
