As an essential part of Chinese culture, Chinese classics and its translation have attracted widely attention around the world, especially in the translation field. The Book of Songs, the first comprehensive anthology of Chinese poems including 305 poems of the Zhou Dynasty (1066-256 B.C.), represents the tradition of Chinese poetics and occupies an indispensable position in ancient Chinese poetry. It is also one of the Confucian classics and textbooks. However, it was marginalized after being translated into English world.

      This thesis intends to take a diachronic and cultural view on The Book of Songs, an English version translated by Arthur Waley (Allen and Unwin,1937).Hermeneutics and Reception Aesthetics will be employed to describe and discuss the misreading in The Book of Songs and its reconstruction in English world. The thesis is to look into how culture and translation influence each other, to reflect on the translation of Chinese classics.

      本文分为四章。第一章是文献综述关于英语翻译上的歌曲和研究的书；早第十八世纪，威廉琼斯（1746-1794），英国汉学家译诗经中的一些诗。第十九个世纪以来，对诗经10多个英语版本已经出版。尽管诗经翻译的历史已经长达200年，对诗经的英文翻译，国内的研究有两个或两个三年历史较短。没有系统的研究已进行到目前为止在西方世界，只有一些零碎的评论，在译者序中可以找到。

      The thesis is composed of four chapters. Chapter One is literature review about English translations of The Book of Songs and studies on it; Early to the 18th century, William Jones (1746-1794), an British sinologist translated some poems in The Book of Songs. Since 19th century, more than 10 English versions of The Book of Songs have been published successively. While the translation history of The Book of songs has a span of more than 200 years, domestic studies on the English translations of The Book of songs have a comparatively short history of two or three decades. No systematic research about it has been conducted in Western world, so far, only some fragmentary comments in translator’s preface can be found.
      Chapter Two discusses misreading appeared in The Book of Songs translated by Arthur Waley, a most popular version in the world, probes into the inevitability and effects of the misreading; In The Book of Songs, Arthur Waley’s creative treason bares both positive and negative effects. Misreading can construct culture and new poetics. Misreading happens when two cultures communicate. On one hand, it enriches the subject culture, on the other hand, it diversifies the application and decoding methods of the object culture from a brand-new perspective. Nevertheless, misreading is treason of the ST. The misreading of the cultural images brings about failure in cross-cultural literature dissemination, prevent the target readers from knowing the ST in the right way. Misreading of The Book of Songs mirrors the intercultural transgression into the traditional Chinese culture to some extent.
