Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research
In recent years, the increasingly frequent communication between countries,nations and social groups enable the issues such as language contact and the influencebetween languages to become a heated topic among the linguists. As the linguistics isadvancing rapidly, language contact and bilingual issues have extended its originalresearch fields，thus forming a special filed called linguistics on language contact.When the speakers with different languages starts to communicate with each other,this will definitely influence at least one language change，ranging from phonology,syntax to semantics.The famous linguist of American structuralism Edward Sapir mentioned when itcomes to language and culture: culture can be defined as what society does and thinksand language is a specific way of expression of thought. As a result，the relationsbetween culture and language can be comprehended as the relation between contentand form. The former determines the latter while the latter reflects the former.Language serves as an important carrier and media for culture, capable of reflectingalmost every aspect in terms of culture, for example, politics, economy, science andtechnology，art, religion and diet, etc. Therefore，when one language borrows a certainamount of words from the other language，the embodying culture of the borrowedlanguage is simultaneously brought in, thus influencing the culture of the targetlanguage. From this perspective, English loanwords are gradually pouring intoChinese, which is actually an indication of the absorbing of the culture betweenoriental culture and western culture, continuously undergoing. Additionally, to makethese loanwords into its own language has already become a commonly-seen practicein the contemporary time. It is because of this both popular and common practiceoccurring in language contact that the issues raised by the phenomenon greatlytriggered the interest of the scholars and the linguists not only at home but abroad.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
This thesis will set the communication between China and western countries as abackground to illustrate the exact influence of English loanwords on Chinese on thebasis of the theory of language contact. By contrastive analysis，the loanwordsoccurring in almost every place will be exemplified specifically and systematically, inan attempt to pursue the best connection of the English loanwords in pure Chineseatmosphere.There are some findings in this research. To begin with，English loanwordsenrich the current Chinese vocabulary in a large number and change the originalfeatures of Chinese words. Next, some semantic changes of Chinese words areoccurring due to the English loanwords. Thirdly，new morphemes are brought intoChinese by English loanwords. The emergence of new morphemes and new wordsleads to adjustment and updating of Chinese vocabulary, semantic, morphologicalsystems. That is to say, Chinese language is undergoing great changes because of thelexical borrowing from English.So the study of the influence of English loanwords on Chinese is of great importance so as to deepen our understanding of language contact. In addition, it canenable us to have a better understanding of how Chinese language changes anddevelops.
