摘要:In recent years,researches of Business English disciplines positioning, curriculumdesign, teaching methods and teaching materials raise great concern. Nevertheless, theemployment situation of the Business English graduates is not optimistic.
2.1 Needs Analysis
In terms of needs analysis theory, it is very important and can be regarded as thekey procedure in ESP teaching and curriculum design. It is quite necessary for us tomake the meaning of "needs" clear before discussing needs analysis. Many differentmeanings of needs have been discussed by a great many researchers. Generallyspeaking, “needs” may mean for the following:For Widdowson, he regards needs as "the learners' present study or fiiture jobrequirements, that is to say,what they can do at the end of language course, and whethertheir goals of attending the language course have been achieved?”(Widdowson,1996:121). And for Mountford,he considers that needs mean what the users or society:,regard as necessary or to be learnt from a program of language instruction (Mountford,1981:27).Here is a point which needs to be mentioned. Hutchinson and Waters propose thatneeds include target needs and learning needs. The former means "what the learnersneed to do in the target situation, including necessities, lacks and wants". The latterrefers to "what the learners need to do in order to learn,such as learner's interests,motivation, attitude, learning styles, personal reasons for learning, resources and timeavailable” (Hutchinson& Waters, 1987:59).

2.2 ESP and Business English
Business English is a branch of English for Specific Purpose (ESP) and thisviewpoint is generally accepted in academic circles. Here, we firstly need to make clearthe definition and classification of ESP then the division of Business Englishclassification. Mackay and Palmer point out, in the teaching process of General English, theteaching goal is not clear. ESP is to solve these problems firstly then develops ateaching reform movement. (Mackay, R & Palmer, J.D. 1978:15.)Hutchinson and Waters argue that ESP is proposed for three reasons: after WorldWar II, English has gradually become the main communication language; theestablishment of learner-centered teaching idea and the development of the theories oflinguistics. In their opinion, “ESP must be seen as an approach not as a product. ESP isnot a particular kind of language or methodology, not does it consist of a particular typeof teaching material. Understood properly, it is an approach to language learning, whichis based on learner need ESP, then, is an approach to language teaching in which alldecisions as to content and method are based on the learner's reason forlearning. ”(Hutchinson & Waters,1987:19)
