When people communicate with one another, they make certain assumptions about the process of perceiving, judging, thinking, and reasoning patterns of each other. They make these assumptions without realizing they are making them. Correct assumptions facilitate communication, but incorrect assumptions lead to misunderstandings and miscommunication often results.
In order to make sure the communication between people from different cultures goes smoothly, a profound knowledge of both the native and alien cultures is essential. Therefore, it is quite necessary that we examine cultural values of America as well as our own-Chinese culture.
