2.2.1 Difficulties encountered
The writer of the report has encountered the following difficulties in the process of translating the first chapter of the Children, Family and the State and made efforts toovercome those difficulties.
First of all, the source text is an introductory academic text that contains some theoreticalterminologies which require the writer of the report to understand them before translation.Due to the lack of relevant background knowledge, it is a great challenge for the writer tograsp the meaning of some professional expressions such as positive right and negative rightat first. Therefore, the writer of the report reads parallel texts before translating, includingarticles of domestic scholars and papers written by the writer of the source text. Only with abasic understanding of these terminologies and theories can the writer better understand theirpractical meanings in specific texts, so as to ensure accurate and effective translation.
The second difficulty that bothers the writer of the report is the polysemous words inEnglish, which means that the meaning of a word or phrase can be ambiguous in differentcontexts.
For example, in this sentence “One becomes either a ‘mature minor’ or a major. In so faras they are consistent with one another, it must be that age functions in the majority thresholdas a reliable indicator of a certain level of cognitive ability”, the word “minor” should not beinterpreted as “lesser in importance, seriousness or significance” but as “the young”. So thewriter of this translation report should understand the actual meaning of these expressions andselects a proper expression in the target language.
