Chapter 4 Case Study of C-E Translation Strategies
4.1 Domestication
Liu Zhongde once gave a definition to the free translation in 1991, that it isparaphrasing the meaning and the spirit of the source text without reproducing thesentence form or the rhetorical feature. When the target readers cannot understandsome concepts or objects from the source culture, the translator needs to explain theconcept in the target language in an easier way, so that the readers will not havedifficulty in understanding the meaning or connotation that the original authorattempts to convey. Based on the universally recognized fact that the Chinese word orphrase often bears more than one connotative meanings, translators should focus theirattention on this and take the context into account when using the method of freetranslation. Some examples are listed below to explain further. The Chinese slang “打白条” is frequently used to connotatively mean writinginformal voucher notes to certify that the official government with insufficient fundowes money to the migrant workers. However, at the literal level, the Chinese word“白条” only represents “a note in white paper” in English language, so the translatorhas to paraphrase the word “白条” into the English expression “IOU (I OWE YOU)”,which conveys a similar connotative meaning with the Chinese “白条”.

Conclusion
In order to promote the international exchange, and to introduce China to theworld in a more comprehensible way, many studies have been carried out in the C-Etranslation strategies of Chinese featured vocabulary and mainly focused ondomestication strategy or foreignization strategy. Due to the cultural vacancy betweenthe western culture and the Chinese culture, as has been discussed above in the thesis,many words with unique Chinese flavor have become untranslatable to some extent.The author advised to adopt domestication and foreignization strategies, and held theopinion that the two strategies were not contradictory to each other at all, and theywere actually mutually complementary. They should be adopted flexibly according tothe text’s different purposes, sources, target audience, the roles of the translator, aswell as the status of the source language and the source culture. If the purpose of thetranslation is to broaden the horizons of the target audience and to bring the sourceculture’s unique elements to the target cultural context, the translator should adopt theforeignization strategy, so that the source culture can be transmitted to the targetreaders to further enrich the target culture and language.
