摘要:In this thesis, nearly three hundred N+N sequences are extracted from texts ofdifferent styles and translated into Chinese. The sequences will be classified into varioustypes by the logical relations holding between the two components.
1.2 Purposes of the research
In this thesis, nearly three hundred N+N sequences are extracted from texts ofdifferent styles and translated into Chinese. The sequences will be classified into varioustypes by the logical relations holding between the two components. The thesis will studythe translation methods of all the selected N+N sequences according to the classificationof their logical relations, make comparison between them, aiming to summarize thetranslating skills for sequences of different logical relations, discover the translation rulesduring the interpretation of this language unit.
2. Literature Review
2.1 Researches on the N+N sequence
2.1.1 Descriptive treatment of N+N sequence
The goal in descriptive treatments has been simply to describe patterns found inestablished compounds. There has been no attempt made, except perhaps some covertones, to predict what a novel or deictic compound might mean.Marchand’s (1969) treatment of compounds is probably the best-known descriptiveaccount. He divides compounds into those containing some verbal form, “verbal nexuscompounds,” and those without, “non verbal nexus compounds,” i.e. noun-nouncompounds. Within this later group, he differentiates between subject type (pork butcher),object type (steamboat), etc. However, he considers further divisions based on meaningto be impossible, saying “As to the notional side of these compounds, the relations inwhich the two substantives may stand to each other are manifold” (Marchand, 1969: 22).Marchand (1969: 44) also discusses exocentric compounds, those whose referent isnot referred to by either element noun, for example, copperhead, cottonmouth andblockhead. He does not state overtly whether or not he thinks they can be completelycategorized. He merely notes that “the compounds chiefly denote living beings (personsor animals), but there are also plant names and a few words denoting various things.Words denoting persons have in most cases a depreciative or mocking tinge.” Among hisexamples are bonehead, blockhead, doughface, humpback, lionheart, potbelly, rubberneck and egghead.
There is no doubt that Beatrice Warren (1978) has produced the most completedescriptive treatment of noun-noun compounds. Although this study is still descriptiverather than generative, it includes some hypotheses about ways to characterize some ofthe compound types. This is also the only descriptive study to attempt to characterizecompounds with more than two elements. In addition, since it is based on a systematicanalysis of a large data corpus, she can offer predictions about the relative frequencies ofthe various kinds of compounds, based on their frequency of appearance in the corpus. She does a type of frequency only, counting each compound only once no matter how many times it appears.Warren (1978: 19) begins with a discussion of the possible syntactic structure ofcompounds. She analyzes the structure of most two-member compounds as being“parallel to that of adjective + noun phrases (green bug, tall girl) in that the firstconstituent 本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
