Who Do I Think I Am
Self Portrait
I am a person of Asian origin, I belong to the Han and was born in the capital of People's Republic of China: Beijing. I am from a very traditional family, my parents are deeply influenced by Chinese traditional Confucian culture, in particular the thought of Chinese Confucian that students should study hard and get good grades. They hope that in the future, I am able to get a good job and income by hard work. My parents are very strict with my study, their parents have always encouraged and asked me to study very hard. Therefore I have obtained a relatively good academic performance before I came to U.S. I took education as my major and finished undergraduate education in China, I want to be a teachers in future. After obtaining a bachelor's degree , I got the opportunity to continue my study in U.S.. The learning phase in U.S. allows me to have a new view for learning and education. In the past, I believed that the most important thing for a student is to get good grades with teachers’ help, so as to get a good job and decent social status in the future. After studying in U.S. for a period of time, my beliefs and value systems have been changed unconsciously. I come to know that in addition to helping students to get good grades, teachers should also help children to improve their teamwork skills; they should help children to build a learning context, allowing children’s learning to be linked with social practice; they should also cultivate children’s sound character and social responsibility, so that they are more adapted to social norms in future; teacher must be able to be good at discovering what children are interested in to guide children to study independently, rather than just let children learn passively. It is worth noting that teachers and parents should not be too utilitarian in guiding children in education, although to get a good job in future is very important for children, but to understand children’s personality, interests and according to the characteristics to guide them in learning is more important. Otherwise, it will result in inconsistent behavior, emotional weariness of children in learning, which will be more negative for children’s growth.
Final Reflection
In China, as there is relatively simple culture, schools, families and communities have a more consistent view of education, they generally believe that schools should dominate educational process. In U.S., due to the presence of cultural diversity, families and communities with different cultural backgrounds have very different view on education, a school must obtain the support of families and communities to enable students to succeed in the school (Barbour, Barbour and Scully, 2010). Therefore, as teachers, they should have good communication skills, through keeping active interaction with parents and communities to
