Managing Communication on Culturally Diverse Workgroups: A Case Study
Abstract
In today's global economy, managers must be able to identify and work with the many types of cultures that exist simultaneously within an organization or a business network. During the last two decades which have witnessed a growing internationalization and globalization of businesses, there has been an increased urge among organizations to improve their knowledge about regional and cultural differences between nations, and thus a growing demand for normative models dealing with cross-cultural conflict issues in business, with the underlying assumption that such models could serve as competitive devices in the conquest of the global market. This trend has allowed the research on intercultural communication and conflict in business organization to establish itself as a significant research field. Aiming to reach and expand the depth of the research in this field, this paper focuses on not merely systemizing forefathers' cultural theories, but also integrating those with organization and divisions. Following the theoretical research on that, the paper focuses on the topic of intercultural communication management within the context of a project team of Travel Chase. To be specific, the research tries to look at how managers can work more effectively in a culturally diverse environment and its impact on individual's communication effectiveness. To achieve that purpose, interviews with managers and surveys with staff were made to explore the topic. The significance of the study lies in that with the specific intercultural context, it offers an example how the effective intercultural workgroup management and communication theory applies to specific cultures. Besides, it may add new perspectives to the original research results of the expert researchers on how management influences communication differences in the culturally diverse group.
