摘要:Even more commonly, thephenomenon of presenting various opinions in the manner of a dialogue between theauthorial standpoint and those of others is observed to function for the purposes ofmanifesting "democracy" and "objectivity" while promoting the textual voice or thehidden values and manipulating public opinion.
1.2 Objectives of the Study
The thesis is to investigate and provide a comprehensive description of the linguisticresources of intersubjective stance, wordings with communicative and rhetorical potentialwhich position the author towards the various points of view activated by the text,including what Stubbs (1996) termed "modal grammar of English" as well as otherconceptions such as polarity, intensification, hedging,concession etc. In other words, thethesis will deal with the relationship between certain lexical choices in radio news reportsand the potential meanings they could convey with respect to stance-taking andrelationships between author, listener, and diverse values presented.Several questions will be concerned in the development of the analysis, for example,by what way the author constructs the textual voice and triggers a debate between variousvoices, how different author-listener relationships can be characterized by different uses oflinguistic resources, how semantic choices are made to influence listeners and to positionthem to accept the textual voice.
Chapter 2 Literature Review
This chapter is intended as a practical introduction; in it I will deal with some basicdefinitions and such concepts and notions in connection with "dialogue" as might causetrouble to general readers and review what has been researched under this background.Since the subject matter at issue is radio English news, it's better to start with somewarming-up statements combining the English news language with a particular medium,the radio,to avoid being obtrusive.
2.1 Media and News:
Undoubtedly as part of our daily life,the mass media are indispensable andinescapable nowadays as the modem communications have drastically altered the ordinaryterms of experience and consciousness, literally giving people a sense of being alive in acommunity, of having a social relation. Through mass media we can get someentertainment from television shows,books and films; we may also have some educationalprogramming provided by the public broadcasting stations. Basically, we could dividemedia content mainly into two parts: news and advertising (Bell, 1991), or add a thirdcategory, entertainment (Fairclough, 1995). Of all these content,that is,a variety ofinformation disseminated, however, the most fundamental is news. People even tend tothink of mass media as the news and use “media” and “news” interchangeably despite thetruth that mass media is definitely more than merely news. The reason behind this is in partthat what is seen as news comprises a great portion of what is transmitted through themedia.
