ly link the remote county to other countries, increasing demand for optical fiber cable transmission. Additionally, with GCC’s 20% increase in the largest wire and cable manufacturing facilities in the Philippines, Phelps Dodge Phillipines, Inc.), the country will be able to take advantage of global GCC technology and penetrate other sectors of the Philippine wire and cable market. Additionally, GCC’s increased PDP investment will allow for further penetration into Southeast Asia markets as well as supporting ongoing operations in Australia, the Middle East and South Africa.
Socio-cultural Environment
The socio-cultural has experienced some dramatic changes over the last decade as more and more countries are seeking greater energy independence for political and economic reasons Climate change concerns are resulting in increased regulatory energy initiatives, emphasizing renewable sources of energy, and influencing lifestyle choices, purchasing and transportation decisions. Additionally, increasing pressure is placed on companies to “go green” not only to make the world a safer place, but also because more and more consumers demand it. If businesses are unable to meet such demands, customers are prone to take their business elsewhere.
In addition to the increasingly popular “green” trend, global firms must also pay attention to a variety of other socio-cultural factors that affect business across borders. For example, engaging in ethnocentrism or generalizing the cultural orientation of any given country can be dangerous when developing marketing strategies, managing the organization, negotiating contracts and ventures, accepting capitalism/democracy, and engaging in entrepreneurial behavior. It is important to understand that such assessments will permeate all aspects of business. Furthermore, global firms must recognize that culture is a concept learned from the world around us, shared by a group of individuals (community, state, country, and region), and is compelling in the sense that it automatically “kicks in”. For example, for many Americans, the perception exists that Mexican must know you before they do business for you and that the Japanese are unable to make up their minds. These cultures are often perceived as unproductive if they take longer lunches or place more of an emphasis on family vs. deadlines. On the contrary, these cultures may view Americans as greedy and insensitive. Thus, it is imperative that GCC understands what values, beliefs, and norms are important to the corresponding culture when doing business across borders.
Global Environment
The wire and cable industry is competitive, mature and cost driven with minimal differentiation for many product offerings among industry participants from a manufacturing or technology standpoint. Thus, the emergence of “global corporation” strategies is vital as GCC considers the adaptations needed to serve other foreign operations. The company is currently being affected by a variety of macro-level trends to include a decline in global growth, recessionary conditions in a multitude of markets, and an increasing weakness in demand for low-voltage electric utility products in North America and construction products in Europe. Additionally, this company faces decreased demand and lower pricing across a broad spectrum of product lines in North America, the continued decline
