f England society, the English literature of 18th century became a prosperity time in the history of English literature.
 In England during this period, we note a new interest in literatures and legends other than those of Greece and Rome. It was in effect a revolt of the English imagination against the neoclassical reason which prevailed from the days of Pope to those of Johnson. There are several characters in the period. The first is that after the Reform Bill of 1832 passed the political power from the decaying aristocrats into the hands of the middle-class industrial capitalists, the Industrial Revolution soon geared up. Scientific discoveries and technologic inventions from railways to steamships, from spinning looms to printing machines quickly brought amazing changes to the country. The third is that the large amounts of profit were accumulated both from expanding its foreign trade markets and from exploiting its huge-sized colonies. The fourth is that the working class was striking for the basic right and better living and working conditions. The fifth is that it was the first mass movement of the English working class and the early sign of the awakening of the poor, oppressed people. The last is that the Victorians experienced fundamental changes. The rapid development of science and technology, new inventions and discoveries in geology, astronomy, biology and anthropology drastically shook people’s religious convictions.
In this paper, through the presentations of 18th century English literature---poetry, essay, novel and drama, and from Taine’s literature is largely the product of the author’s time and society, we can see the prosperity of 18th century English literature has a close relation with the English society of that time.
 
II. The Representation of the Prosperity of the 18th Century English Literature  18世纪英国文学繁荣的表征

With the development of economy, military and industry in the 18th century, the English literature gave us many kinds of presentations, for example, poetry, prose, novel, drama and etc. Also, some 18th century famous writers’ masterpieces will be introduced in the following.
A.   Poetry
In the 18th century, the English poetry was still very active, and there were many famous poets who had left us a lot of famous characteristic poetries. The characters could be summed up as that in the early 18th century, neoclassicism was very popular, the poetry was mainly about the lives of the upper classes in big cities like London and etc., and the main poetic style was the heroic couplet; while in the second half of the 18th century, sentimentalism and pre-romanticism began to appear, which were main about the nature, and the poetic style was ancient folk and blank verse. Next the masterpieces of the famous poets’ will be introduced.
