4. The listening materials for extensive listening
Extensive listening activities use materials which are usually easier. Detailed tasks are not set, though the teachers may indicate broadly what to listen for and ask one or two questions at the end to check that the main points have been understood. Extensive listening gives general practice to the students, increases their exposure to the language, and ought to be enjoyable. Although students have an hour’s class to practice their listening and oral English a week, it is insufficient to meet the needs. Practice makes perfect. The most effective way we stress listening to the tape is at least an hour every day. Many students have cassette players and tapes. Teachers should recommend them some suitable tapes to listen. The content and the difficulty of the tapes should be suitable to hold their interests and help them concentrate on listening. When students are listening, ask them to repeat or imitate to practice their oral English at the same time. At the beginning, it is necessary to check their listening homework. This proves to be effective.
4.1 Initial stages
In the initial stages, jokes and personal anecdotes are useful for this, they are enjoyable and you can tell if at least some people have understood by their response to the humor. Listening to pop songs is also a form of extensive listening and can be a powerful motivating factor in some situations. Many students feel they learn many English from listening to songs. Try to find some recordings of songs where the words are reasonably clear (folk or country songs and slow love songs are usually reasonably clear) and play something as they get dressed each morning. This will help to accustom them to the rhythms of spoken English, and they may learn some new vocabulary too. Remember, however, that the grammar of songs may not always be exactly what the students learn in their textbook. English and American people are allowed to make occasional grammar mistakes when they speak or sing but, if possible, try not to copy them in this. Nevertheless, when listening to a song, sometimes discipline them by trying to write down its words.
4.2 Elevation stages
In the elevation stages, films, and stage plays are excellent but it can be discouraging if full-length plays and films are introduced too early. You can introduce the students to buy cassettes or records not only of songs in English but also of plays, short stories and poetry. These can also be a very pleasant way of practicing listening comprehension. The text of what is on the recording will also probably be available. Try to listen several times without reading the text. Later check their comprehension by listening and reading at the same time. Authentic conversations, with background noise as in real life, should also be used when possible.
4.3 English corner
In China, English is learnt mostly in the classroom. It is rarely used in daily communication, but English acquisition requires much practice. Without much communication practice, there is no feedback, and this will hinder from progressing, English corner is a good means to reach this purpose. English corners, held in grassy areas or gardens on campus once or twice a week, is a time for students to meet together for the purpose of speaking and listening English. Nearly all universities have English corners, some topics are posted in
