摘要:Because of the painful nature of the experience of slavery, most characters repress their memory and experience the loss of selves.

of loving small as a protective measure, he knows what Sethe means. “He knew exactly what she meant: to get to a place where you could love anything you chose—not to need permission for desire—well now, that was freedom”. Although Paul D knows the conditions of freedom and Sethe knows the conditions of love, each has to learn to claim that freedom, to claim that love, and thereby to claim genuine community and begin the process of healing. Through the text, we can feel Beloved’s existence in Sethe’s memory and guilt, in Denver’s questions, and in Paul D’s conflict (as well as sexual encounter) with Beloved. With the vacillated appearance of Beloved as well as the fragmented narrative, the re-memory begins. Besides the well-organized text, the novel also has an elaborately -designed title. As the title/personage in the story, Beloved can be broken into three parts—the words be and love and the letter d. The word be highlights one of the central questions of the novel, what does it mean to be a human being and then.

Particularly, “what does it mean to be a human being when one’s primary humanity is denied”. Each of the primary characters in the novel must confront this question on their own terms and come to their own conclusions. Love is another keyword that reflected through the whole novel. A careless reading of the novel may results in a superficial conclusion that it is just a bitter love story. However, this novel deals with love by exploring different kind of interpersonal relationships— love between mother and daughter (Sethe and Beloved, Sethe and Denver, Sethe and Suggs), love between wife and husband (Sethe and Halle, Sethe and Paul D), and love between friends (Sethe and Paid, Sethe and Amy). Obviously, these loves are seriously complicated by slavery. As for the end of the title, the letter d usually functions linguistically in English to signify past tense. It is that past the character Beloved forces both Paul D and Sethe to bear in order to create a future for themselves in which theycan begin to be on their own terms and by their own definitions. The novel is ended with a harmonious atmosphere. The ghost Beloved vanishes with the help of the whole community, and 124 becomes quiet. But Morrison did more than just that. The vanished Beloved is “something larger than the people who lived there”. In a 1988 interview with Christina Davis, she explains that official versions of history have erased or distorted the African American experience, so that Black people now face the task of setting the record straight by recovering the stories, the voices, and the very presence of African Americans within a national consciousness.

3 Conclusion The last chapter of the novel reveals the real purpose and the necessity to write the story. Although she emphasize that “It was not a story to pass on”, this history will be remembered by the people, especially by the black people. In this sense, Beloved isn’t an incident of one -family but of “Sixty Million and more”. Actually, it represents the experience of all the black people. Morrison wants this experience to be remembered, not to be forgotten and disremembered. It is only by farcing the bitter experience undauntedly can the healing of the whole nation achieved. Thus we see Morrison’ s great efforts, her ingenuity and unique writing techniques.
