So the episodes being irrelevant to the theme is the fifth characteristic of the short story. 3.5 Three different points of view To make the story credible, the way it is told becomes very important. In this story the author uses the first-person minor point of view. The narrator “I” may, or may not, be the author himself, but the important thing is that the narrator possesses authority. The story begins with “This story is about a railroad detective named Charley Best”, and then the narrator changes to the past tense and tells what he has heard from his father. In fact, “father” is t he real narrator of the stories. Charley Best’s stories, “my”father’s father’s story, and the other stories are all heard from “my” father, except the experience of hunting and boxing. To some extent, readers are led to sharing “my” father’s thoughts, feelings, experiences, reactions and comments. At the beginning of the story, the author introduces us to one of the characters, Charley Best and the background situation. But the author shifts Charley Best quickly to “my” father’s father, by using a sentence of “my father tells this story and said his father told it to him, having known Best or known others who knew him.” Then a story between “father” and father’s father begins. However, the point of view is the father of the narrator, that is, “father” is the real narrator in this story. By mixing the first-person minor and the point of view of “my” father, the organization of the story is arranged skillfully. The stories include “my” father’s grandpa, “my” grandpa, “my” father, “I” and some other persons, so the span of time and space is extensive. By way of “me” telling the stories that “my” father has told “me”, the story is more credible than being told by others. When coming to the ending, the narrator tells his own experience—hunting with his father. This part of the story is told in the first-person point of view. Thus three points of view are employed in the short story and the narrator narrates us some wonderful stories in this way. So employing three different points of view is the sixth characteristic of the short story. Conclusion As what we have analyzed above, we could come to the conclusion that the short story don’t get comfortable has its own unique charm and appeals to the readers with unconventional structure, characters with no well-defined traits, untraceable plot, irrelevant episodes to the theme and three different points of view. What is more, the traditional chronological order is hardly followed. Instead of a linear development of plots, the plot development is fragmentary and untraceable. With the plot development being fragmentary, another important element of a short story ---characterization, becomes marginal, without well-defined traits. The structure off the story is organized skillfully. By telling a story one after another, and making the conclusion echoing the introduction, the author is able to form a chain in structure. Moreover, the theme seems not so important. When events are chosen, the author does not take the theme but the structure into account, so there are lot of episodes, which are irrelevant to the theme in the story.
