In the world dominated by western countries, they struggle for right of speech and self-interpretation, narrate life of their own nation with an “unfiltered” voice, and keep a real record of colonialism. Accordingly, post-colonial literature differs from the orthodox literature of Europe and America because it describes, from the standpoint of the colonized, the predicament in colonies, uncovers the cultural hegemony from colonists and tries to revitalize national culture, which has already been margined. The post-colonial literature consequently focuses mainly on such themes as oppressed women in non-mainstream culture, cultural phenomenon during colonial period, loss and yearning of local culture, equal right of speech, “the other”, “civilized savage” and so on.

B. The Tradition of Symbolism in the Post-colonial Novels
Symbolism rose at the beginning of the 20th century and became prevalent in modernism poems. It aims to express the theme by distinctive, accurate, implicit, and highly-concentrated symbols and dissolve the poets’ momentary thoughts and feelings into the verses. Symbolism attempts to isolate a single image to reveal its essence. It stresses that subject matters should be chosen freely, which deals with single, concentrated moments of experience. It values the instantaneous effect which is visual and concise. 8 Take Eraz Pound’s In a Station of the Metro as an example: The apparition of these faces in the crown; Petals on a wet, black bough. The poet is providing the reader with a picture rather than any comments. The best effect of symbolism is visual and concrete. Truth is revealed by a physical object. The movement is influenced greatly by the Chinese imagist poetry. However, the symbolism in the 20th century differs itself from the traditional Chinese poetry in the following aspects. Philosophy and aesthetics, which emphasize and describe oneness of man and nature. Hence, Chinese traditional poetry emphasizes construction of nature in a natural manner, while the western symbolism is based on Bergson’s Intuitionism and Philosophy of life.
