摘要:The present study aims at exploring the overall use of English PLS employed bycollege students in the English education program, and the correlation between EnglishPLS and English pronunciation achievement, and also the differences in PLS use betweenstudents of different pronunciation levels.
Relationship between LLS Use and Language Achievement
Since the early 1980s,researchers have endeavored to find out the strategies relatedto language proficiency by examining the relationship between LLS using and second language achievement. Relevant work appeared continually, but with inconsistentfindings.Some researches showed that only non-traditional strategies were related to secondlanguage achievement. For example, Bialystok (1981) studied with questionnaire therelation between second language level and the four strategies. The four strategies in hisresearch included functional practice and inferencing,which were non-traditional,andformal practice and monitoring,which were traditional. The study demonstrated that onlyfunctional practice was related with second language level.Huang and Van Naersson (1985) employed a questionnaire to investigate LLS usedby English majors. 60 English major seniors participated in the study. According to theresponses by the students, the strategies were classified into three groups: formal practice,functional practice and monitoring. With multiple regression analysis, they found thatfunctional practice is the strongest predictor of students' oral proficiency. This findingaccorded with Bialystok's (1981) conclusion.However, some researchers showed that both traditional and non-traditionalstrategies were related with second language achievement. For example, Wen Qiufnag(1996) employed a questionnaire and surveyed 242 English major sophomores from fiveuniversities. She found that both formal practice and functional practice were related withstudents' achievement in TEM-4 (Test for English Majors-4). The result was confirmedby the subsequent investigation on some non-English majors ((Wen Qiufang and WangHaixiao, 1996).
