摘要:This study is of both practical and theoretical value. Practically, understanding ofthe effect of small group discussion on English postgraduate students’ academiccompetence and of how it contributes to academic competence will provide valuableinformation on postgraduate educational system.

D on Academic Competence
Regarding research question one, the results of this study demonstrated thatsmall group discussion had high contribution to English postgraduate students’professional knowledge, problem-solving abilities and critical thinking. The datashows that more than half of students will think about the authors and supervisors andother members’ opinion critically and choose different ways to verify the authors’views. In previous studies, Sanasuttipun(2009) stated that small group discussioncould increase students’ critical thinking, self-directed learning, and learningsatisfaction. Bilgin (2006) pointed out the results indicated that discussion ofpropositional knowledge related to chemical equilibrium concepts in small groupsprovided an efficient method in providing students with opportunity to promote theirconceptual understanding and eliminating their misconceptions of chemicalequilibrium concepts. The participants for questionnaire in this study might be limited.The other effects of small group discussion on English postgraduate students did nottelling from the questionnaire data. Therefore, this study’s findings might be limitedin generalization to other settings.

Conclusion


The study demonstrated that small group discussion had positive effects onEnglish postgraduate students’ professional knowledge, problem-solving abilities andcritical thinking. And negotiation and interactive engagement prompted thedevelopment of academic competence including professional knowledge,problem-solving abilities and critical thinking. The presentation benefitedpostgraduate students. Presentation enabled students to well prepare for discussiontopics, which helped students to effectively communicate their ideas to the group andto obtain a high level of thinking. Also the sources of reading materials used beforediscussion should be diverse including academic books, research journals, andacademic magazines. Fascinating reading might inspire students to engage highly intheir self-study, and to share their knowledge, experiences, ides or attitudes activelyin their group discussion. Thus small group discussion should be used to improvepostgraduate students’ academic competence when applicable.
