2 Literature Review


2.1 China English
China English is the very outcome of the localization of English in China. As a non-nativeEnglish variety, it is an effective mean for the introduction of foreign culture in China anddisseminating Chinese culture around the world. “China English” was first put forward by Ge Chuangui (1980), who presented some issuesin the translation from Chinese to English in his article “Talks on the Problems of Translationfrom Chinese to English” published in Translation Newsletter. He advocated use ChinaEnglish expressions, such as “Four Books”(四书), “xiucai” (秀才), “Five Classics” (五经),“May Fourth Movement” (五四运动),“the Gang of Four” (四人帮),“Four Modernization”(四个现代化) in C-E translation when there are no equivalent counterparts in Englishlanguage. Although native speakers may feel confused about these expressions for the firsttime, they can understand easily if needful explanation is added.In his opinion, the variety of English in China should be named as “China English”, forhe thinks that “Chinese English” or “Chinglish” contains derogatory implication of Chineseusers’ deficiency in English and he argued that much attention need paying to distinguishChina English from Chinglish. Nevertheless, Ge didn’t offer a clear explanation of ChinaEnglish and his illustration mainly concerns vocabulary in translation rather than languagevariation perspective.

2.2 World Englishes


2.2.1 World Englishes
This model describes the global situation of English in terms of three concentric circles.The Inner Circle countries are the traditional bases of English where English is the primary ordominant language and is acquired as the mother tongue. These ENL (English as nativelanguage) countries include the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Anglophone Canada, and some of the Caribbean territories. The Outer Circle refers tothe countries with long history of colonization, where English has official and institutionalfunctions and is used as an intra and international language. These ESL (English as a secondlanguage) countries include South Africa, India, Singapore, Nigeria, the Philippines,Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, etc. Finally, the Expanding Circle involves those countrieswith increasing number of English speakers in which English is regarded as a foreignlanguage and English plays no historical or governmental role, but its functional domains areexpanding rapidly. These EFL (English as a foreign language) countries include China, Russia,Japan, most of Europe, Korea, Egypt, Indonesia, etc.His model was first published in 1982 and represents “the types of spread, the patterns ofacquisition and the functional domains, in which English is used cross cultures andlanguages” (Widdowson, 2003, p. 34). This model clearly displays a picture of the varioussituations and functions of world Englishes, which has the pioneering position in the study ofEnglish varieties.
