摘要:Humor is a miracle in human life. The study of humor has both the theoretical andpractical importance. Understanding the nature of humor is a problem for linguistics.Humor is important and engaging aspects of conversation. Consequently, they havereceived attention from many perspectives and approaches.

xims of Conversation. Studying humor from theperspective of linguistics is an effective method to reveal the mechanism of humor itself. This will lead the study of humor to a deeper level and touch the essence of humor. Thisthesis aims to present a better understanding of humor from the perspective of discourseanalysis, an approach rarely adopted in the study of humor before.People from different ages and cultural backgrounds come across humor everyday. Many people will encounter humor. In their daily life, they will find somethinginteresting or flinny enough to laugh at and thus they are considered to have a sense ofhumor. The hypothetical person lacking a sense of humor would likely find the behaviorinduced by humor to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. Although to what degreean individual can appreciate humor is largely decided by personal taste. Different personsmay have different understandings about the same humor. The elements which willinfluence the understanding and appreciation of humor are various, including educationbackground, culture, intelligence, geographical location, context and maturity.

2 Literature Review

Before we further analyze humor, it is necessary to gain insight into the humortheory.

2.1 Studies on humor

2.1.1 The defijoition of humor
How to define the word "humor"? The answer to the question is rather difficult to.answer. We can recognize humor and present examples of humor easily. But it is ratherhard to give an accurate definition about the humor and reveal the mechanism of humorand its patterns. Yet humor may have existed as long as the human literary history.Humor is an unclassifiable and unmanageable subject, something which has consistentlydefeated the attempts of scientists to explain it. Saul Steinberg,American cartoonist and illustrator, ever said, "Trying to define the word 'humor' is oneof the definitions of humor." The attempt of defining humor itself is humorous. Differentscholars have given various definitions of humor from their own fields. The earliesthumor in the West was recorded in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The English word"humor" stemmed from the Latin word, which means "liquid" or "fluid". It is related tothe "theory of humors" of Medieval medicine (Attardo, 1994:6). The very originalmeaning of "humor" is "one of the four liquids of (blood, phlegm, choler, melancholy) inour body, which is said to determine a person's mental and physical qualities" accordingto The New Oxford Dictionary of English.
