2. Literature Review

This chapter begins with an introduction of different definitions of emotionalintelligence. Then it gives a detailed review of previous theoretical structures and relatedresearches on emotional intelligence and EI Assessment scale of EI at home and aboard.

2.1 Definition of EI and teachers’ EI
In its broadest sense, emotional intelligence can be understood not only as thepossession of skillful knowledge of emotion but also as having an ability to use thisknowledge in one’s own life.In 1920, the psychologist Edward Lee Thorndike described social intelligence as abilitydistinct from abstract intelligence, defining it as “the ability to manage and understand menand women, boys and girls, to act wisely in human relations”.More specifically, emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to perceive andexpress emotion accurately and adaptively, the ability to understand emotion andemotional knowledge, the ability to use feelings to facilitate thought, and the ability toregulate emotions in oneself and in others. (Bar-On, Parker, 2000). Bar-On (1997) coinedthe term emotional quotient for his measure and defined EI as “an array of non-cognitivecapabilities, competencies and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in coping withenvironmental demands and pressures”.
Peter Salovey and John Mayer (1990) are given credit for coining the term“emotional intelligence.” They defined EI as a mental ability model: “A type of emotionalinformation processing that includes accurate appraisal of emotions in oneself and others, appropriate expression of emotion, and adaptive regulation of emotion in such ways as toenhance living”. They described emotional intelligence as a form of social intelligencethat involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, todiscriminate among them, and use this information to guide one’s thinking and action. They defined EI as the ability to perceive accurately, appraise, and express emotion; theability to understand emotion and emotional knowledge; and the ability to regulateemotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth. Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso(2002)defined emotional intelligence as the ability to perceive emotions and emotional meanings, and to reflectively regulate emotions, to assess and generate emotions so as to assistthought, to understand and emotions and emotional meanings, and to reflectively regulateemotions in ways that promote emotional and intellectual growth.
