1.2 Purpose of the Research
Critical thinking skills integrate several skills and sub-skills,which can be reflected inall aspects of language practices, i.e. listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. Inaddition, it is believed that “students’ writing is the medium by which their critical thinkingskills are being demonstrated.,’ (Blattner & Frazier,2002, p.64) Likewise, some other scholars echo this belief by pointing out that "writing is the tool of thinking." (Condon &Kelly-Riley, 2004,p.56) Consequently, the examination of students' critical thinking skillsthrough their writing should prove to be effective. Besides, thesis writing is moredemanding than other forms of writing for its complexity of structure and theme requiresthe integration of all the critical thinking skills, thus revealing more on the students' actuallevel in critical thinking. This research, therefore, aims at exploring English majorundergraduates' critical thinking skills in thesis writing. By employing proper measurementtools and textual analysis, this research assesses the graduation theses of English majorundergraduates in Donghua University to explore the status-quo of these students,criticalthinking skills reflected in thesis writing, and determine their weak links in presenting theircritical thoughts in their theses. Based on the data analysis and discussions, the researcherwill make several pedagogical suggestions for both the teachers and the students.
Chapter 2 Literature Review
Universities in foreign countries have long centered upon the fostering of students,critical thinking skills, resulting in the abundance of related research. Chinese education,however, has not recognized the importance of critical thinking until recently. Researchconducted in China on this topic is not abundant in comparison with the studies madeabroad. A large body of existing domestic and international research from a practicalperspective mainly involves two aspects; critical thinking and its assessment tools, as wellas the cultivation of students' critical thinking skills. The next two sections will review theprevious research from these two perspectives.
2.1 Previous Research on Critical Thinking and Assessment Tools
